I love The Smith. It’s the sort of restaurant that I think a lot of cities outside of New York have, but that we are woefully lacking in here in Gotham. Whether you’re there for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there is truly a dish for everyone on the menu, whether it’s a kale salad or a uber-decadent tomato soup with a grilled cheese crust. It doesn’t take itself too seriously; it just churns out extremely delicious renditions of food that everyone enjoys eating.
Their mac and cheese appears on many Best Of lists, so it’s been on my radar for quite some time. I finally ordered a skillet’s worth at brunch this past weekend, before catching a movie at the best theater ever (reclining seats! reserved seats!).
Our waitress told us the cheese blend is a mix of Parmesan, Fontina, Cheddar and Swiss, but the Swiss is definitely the dominant flavor. If you’re a big Swiss cheese fan, then, seriously, this is the mac for you. The skillet came out of the kitchen at just the right temperature, the noodles were cooked perfectly and it does photograph very well, don’t you think?
The Smith, locations vary. Check website for details.
